Pinker Aims for Rally America Title in '08

Australian rally standout Andrew Pinker, who finished second in the Rally America National Championship Series last year in only his first full season of Rally America competition, has set his sights on the series title in 2008.

Pinker will again partner with co-driver Robbie Durant on the RockStar Energy Drink Rally Team, a two-car effort which includes X Games rally car racing gold medalist Tanner Foust and co-driver Chrissie Beavis.

Pinker remained a championship contender until the series finale in 2007, ultimately finishing just 12 points behind champion Travis Pastrana despite battling a horsepower deficit and braking issues in the last event.

The Perth native – who earned two wins and six additional top-five finishes in nine rallies last season – is confident of his ability to challenge for the 2008 Rally America title.

“We know we can attack a lot more than we did last year,” said Pinker, who drives the No. 2 Rockstar Energy Drink Rally Team Subaru Impreza WRX STI. “The second half of the season, we played it safe a little too much and were a little bit too reserved. I’m quite well aware of that. We’ll be able to attack the championship a lot harder this year from the get-go.

“We have experience at all the events now, which will level the playing field. We’re also doing our own development and building our own cars this year, and they’re better than they were last year.”

Pinker will kick off his championship run at the season opening Sno-Drift rally on Jan. 25 in northern Michigan. He finished third at Sno-Drift last year, his first of six podium finishes.

“Last year, we were on track for the win with a victory on a long stage, but that stage got cancelled, which cost us the overall victory,” explained Pinker. “This year, if I have a clean run and the event has a clean run, I’m hoping to challenge for the win.”

The Rally America National Championship Series is the premier rally-racing series in the United States. Competitors reach speeds well over 100 mph in modified street cars on natural-terrain courses of gravel, dirt or snow. Qualifying Rally America drivers are invited to compete in the Summer X Games, the annual leading action-sport event that is broadcast live on ABC and ESPN.

RallySport Magazine Interview with Andrew Pinker

Aussie rally driver Andrew Pinker got his first taste of rallying in a 'win a drive in Rally Australia' competition back in 1992. Since then, he has travelled the world to pursue his love of rallying, and recently just missed out on clinching the Rally America title. Pinker spoke with RallySport Mag after the season finale.

It’s been an interesting journey from Australia to the US via Wales and Spain. Can you tell us how a guy from Perth came to be contesting the Rally America title?

Andrew Pinker: "It’s kind of the way I’ve lived my whole life, moving from place to place to place. I didn’t want to just stay in Australia, and while the European scene is really big, I wasn’t really finding anything that interesting there, so we decided to do something else. We were watching what was going on in America and wanted to come out here. When the time came and we thought it was right, we shipped the car that we had in Europe out and got on a plane and flew over. We shipped a bunch of other stuff, bought a trailer and a truck, filled her up, and drove to the first rally. It’s the same as doing a rally anywhere – just a little bit more travel and a few more shipping costs."

Pinker Claims Second in Rally America Championship, Third in Season Finale

RockStar Energy Drink Rally Team driver Andrew Pinker battled a horsepower deficit and braking issues en route to a hard-fought third-place finish in the Rally America season finale and an impressive second place overall in the championship.

Subaru Rally Team USA driver Travis Pastrana clawed into the lead in the final stages of the Lake Superior Performance Rally to take the win and his second consecutive Rally America title.

Entering the Michigan season finale, it would be winner take all as Pastrana and his Subaru Rally Team USA teammate Ken Block were tied in the overall championship standings, four points behind Pinker.

While the talented Australian – who had never competed on the challenging and changeable roads of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula – suffered due to a lack of power on Day 1, his RockStar Energy Drink teammate Tanner Foust set blistering times early on.

Although Pinker rebounded with a stage win on Day 2, the effort wasn’t enough to catch Pastrana, and victory slipped away from Foust in the final stages when he suffered a flat tire. In the end, Foust was second, just 3.5 seconds behind Pastrana. Pinker finished third.

“It was close, but no cigar,” said Pinker, whose runner-up finish in the championship came in only his first full season of Rally America competition. “We’ll get it next year.”

The 2008 Rally America National Championship season begins Jan. 25-26 with the Sno*Drift rally in Atlanta, Mich.
